It's Valentine's Day. A marketing celebration in which buying someone useless trinkets and fattening sugars expresses how much you care about the other person. The celebration may have multiple influences. Catholics recognized 11 different Valentine's Days but only 3 on this date. Ancient Romans celebrated a fertility rite called Lupercalia (related to the wolf) on the 15th of February. The first written mentioning this date is reserved for Chaucer's Parlement of Foules. However, the modern reinvention and mass produced celebration can be traced back to Esther Howland's Valentine's Greeting cards sold in 1847, but inspired by an Anglo tradition. It wasn't until the 20th century until the practice was extended to all manners of mass manufactored knicknacks.
