Out of Control Collections

I am really not one to criticize. My DVD and comic collection have a definite burden to them, but not sufficient enough to become my life or worse, avalanche my life. Some other souls have not been as fortunate. This one I saw today on ebaY :

New Important Information for Those Serious About Bidding. See Below.

From Thomas Edison to American Idol, this is the complete history of the music that shaped and defined five generations. 3 million records and 300,000 CDs containing more than 6 million song titles. It's the undisputed largest collection of recorded music in the world. About half of the recordings are new and never played, and every genre of 20th century music is represented. There are countless rare recordings worth hundreds, or even thousands of dollars each on the collectibles market. Organized and cataloged, the collection is meticulously maintained and housed in a climate-controlled warehouse. The estimated value of this amazing collection is more than $50 million.

Steve Mellon/Post-Gazette
Paul Mawhinney examines a Rolling Stones album worth $10,000.

Every recording in the collection was purchased by the collection's owner over the past fifty years and represents a lifetime of work and his desire to see the music preserved for future generations. Advancing age and health concerns are forcing the owner to sell.

The history of 20th century music belongs in a museum (existing or new), or a music library. The collection's owner is seeking a private collector or a philanthropist willing to buy and donate the collection. A donation would qualify as a tax-deductible event. The collection contains many thousands of duplicate copies, which could be sold individually on the collectibles market to recoup a substantial part of the purchase price. If you're contemplating creating a museum around the collection, we can help with additional exhibits and design services.

The new owner of this magnificent collection will also acquire (1) the rights to Spin-Clean, the owner's patented vinyl record cleaning system, considered the best on the market by audiophiles the world over, (2) the rights to Discmist CD cleaner, (3) CD Saver 2-part archival CD storage sleeves, (4)Yellow Jacket 45 RPM acid-free archival storage sleeves, (5) ownership of the owner's six publishing companies and eight independent record labels, and (7) more than $100,000 worth of antique recording and listening devices and other music memorabilia currently on loan to a museum.

Payment terms are 10% of the purchase price within five business days, by certified check, bank transfer or PayPal, and the balance by certified check or bank transfer within 30 business days. The owner will ship anywhere in the world, and the buyer pays actual packing and shipping costs from Pittsburgh, PA, USA.

This is a NO RESERVE auction. High bid wins.

If you want this collection, and you're betting no one will bid, giving you an opportunity to make a lower offer after the auction, you should consider the following:

1. $3million is a ridiculously low price to start with. The owner of the collection has turned down offers for far more over the years, including an offer of $28million nine years ago. It's being sold this way now because his life circumstances have changed.

2. If there are no bids, we plan to re-list it immediately. But once it's re-listed, publicity will be far greater than it is now. We've been inundated with media requests world-wide, and have done interviews nearly non-stop. In a matter of hours or days, the collection will be seen in major electronic and print media world-wide, taking our story to a new audience even beyond the reach of eBay. This valuable collection is soon to be seen for the first time by tens, if not hundreds of millions of people around the world.

Quite frankly, we welcome the prospect of no bids at this time. The collection will fetch a higher price when it's re-listed.

3. The Collection WILL NOT be broken up if not sold on eBay, other than possibly having the digital and analog portions separated.

This was not the only instance. Earlier in the week I saw this on Gizmodo :

There had been a mention, on Gizmodo late last year, for the largest collection of Apple computers. The guy had a special room inside his house and there was extra care to mention (in the story of course) that he had a girlfriend and she was accepting of this obsessive quirkiness. The largest Star Wars collectible figures collection coincidental also in its own room and the collector's girl friend is oh so very understanding. In this article, the girlfriend is brought out as the 4th word in the 2nd sentence. It like when you were (and some still are) single and when you would go to a bar (or any public place) and randomly talk to a woman & the first thing they would say is "I have a boyfriend." or would find ways to insert him into every story, anecdote and joke she could figure. And the whole time you know that the boyfriend doesn't exist or if there was a boyfriend, why isn't he there now? Most times all you were doing is small talk, with no interest past that moment. It would be like rushing to get your shotgun and shooting anything that moved, because you heard a creaking sound in your house during the night. A slight over reaction.

But I digress. The collector's girlfriend. It sounds like a myth. Atlantis, Arc of the Covenant, Chasing Amy (lesbian interested in straight men) or Holy Grail. But maybe when they say girlfriend it could have any number of meanings from a flesh and blood woman to fembot (check Japan). Hey, it worked for Andrew McCartney and it can work for them.
